SANDAKAN: A leak in an underground water pipe along the access road to Astana Height Housing has raised concerns among local residents following the continuous flow of raw water seeping out from beneath the road surface.

Following complaints from residents, Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong conducted a site visit to inspect the situation. The visit was also accompanied by Tanjung Papat Assemblyman Alex Thien.

Observations at the site revealed that the leak involved raw water, which is water that has not yet undergone treatment, flowing continuously from beneath the road surface.

According to Calvin, the underground water pipe leak not only results in large-scale wastage of water resources but also has the potential to cause various other problems, including damage to road structures, soil subsidence, and safety risks to road users and nearby residents.

“If this situation is allowed to persist, it could have long-term effects on public infrastructure maintenance costs and jeopardise public safety,” he said.

In this regard, he urged the Sabah State Water Department (JANS), as the relevant water authority, to take immediate action to repair and replace the damaged underground water pipes.

He stressed that repair works should be carried out comprehensively and not merely on a temporary basis to ensure that the leakage problem does not recur in the future.

In addition, Calvin emphasised the need for JANS technical personnel and technicians to be more proactive, including enhancing regular monitoring, conducting early inspections of ageing pipes, and responding promptly once complaints are received.

“This proactive approach is important to prevent continuous water wastage and to reduce damage to road surfaces and other public infrastructure,” he said.

He added that prolonged raw water leakage not only causes losses in terms of resources and finances, but also runs counter to the government’s efforts to ensure efficient and sustainable water management.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continue monitoring developments related to the issue and to ensure that the relevant authorities take appropriate action in the interest and safety of the public.

He also welcomed feedback and complaints from the public so that any issues related to water supply and infrastructure can be reported and resolved more quickly and effectively.
