Christmas: Prison Department frees 10 inmates on licence

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah and Labuan Prison Department marked Christmas 2025 by releasing inmates on licence under the “Ihsan Madani: Kepulangan Yang Dinanti” programme.

The initiative gives conditional releasees the chance to reunite with their families and start anew in the community.

The event at the State Prison Director’s Office saw 10 people released, including eight from Kota Kinabalu Central Prison and two from Kota Kinabalu Women’s Prison.

The total number of parolees freed across Sabah for Christmas reached 70, while nationwide 528 inmates were released under the programme.

The release ceremony was officiated by Sabah and Labuan Prison Director’s Office Penitentiary and Correctional Division Head Abu Sufian Mansoor.

Senior officials from the Prison Department, police and welfare agencies were present, reflecting strong inter-agency support for rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

Abu Sufian said the programme embodies the department’s commitment to ihsan and humanity, helping parolees return to society as responsible individuals.

“The programme allows parolees to rebuild their lives, strengthen family bonds, pursue employment and plan for the future,” he said, urging them to make the most of this opportunity.

The initiative reflects the evolution of the Malaysian Prison Department into a Centre for Humanitarian and Cultural Development (CHCDC), focusing on rehabilitation, social responsibility and community engagement.

Officials also highlighted the role of government and non-governmental agencies in providing employment and support, helping parolees reintegrate successfully into society.
