Sabah Muaythai Association proud of Sabah trio

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Muaythai Association (SMA) is proud of its three athletes who delivered one gold, one silver and one bronze for Malaysia at the 33rd SEA Game in Thailand.

Apart from the historic win by Angie Yan Jia Chi in the wai kru solo female, Eva Anastasia also captured a silver in the female 48kg event and Asyraf Danial delivered one bronze in the wai kru solo male category.

SMA president Nazri Abu Razak said their success is the result of their hard work and sacrifices.

“We are very proud of their achievement, especially Angie Yan Jia Chi who managed to win the gold medal with her routine demonstrating the respect, discipline and gratitude for the art of Muay Thai.

“This success story is not only the result of their efforts and commitment, but also reflects the role and continuous efforts of Sabah Muaythai Association in raising the name and dignity of Muaythai in the State,” he said.

He added that it was also the best ever achievement by Sabah muaythai athletes at the biennial games after the bronze medal outing by Ridzuan Norsyahmie Daud at the 2019 SEA Games in Philippines.

He also said the latest result indicated the gradual progress of their development plan since it started in 2015 and expects more hard work ahead.

He urged for more support and hoped to organise more competitions locally to reduce the cost of competing outside the state.

Meanwhile, the State’s head coach Cyrille Dhillon Tahing said Angie’s success in winning the gold medal was an extraordinary achievement and proved her talent and dedication in muaythai, while the achievement of Eva Anatasia and Asyraf Danial further proved that the State athletes can compete among the best in the region.

“I am very proud of their performance and hopefully they can inspire more up and coming athletes.

“Their achievement is also the result of continuous disciplined training with strong support from the coaches and the Sabah Muaythai Association, who always strive to raise the name of the State Muaythai to the national and international level,” he said.

Both Nazri and Cyrille also expressed their gratitude to the Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Ministry and Sabah Sports Council for their support.
