Kota Kinabalu: Loi Kok Liang (Api-Api - Warisan) called on the Sabah Government to ensure that the 2026 State Budget not only supports sporting achievements but also provides sustainable pathways for athletes’ lives beyond competitive arenas.
Loi said supporting sports allocations is important, but we must also ensure athletes have clear pathways for life after leaving competitive sports.

He highlighted the challenges faced by athletes, including those with disabilities, who often struggle with limited employment opportunities, communication barriers and insufficient social acceptance.
“Athletes with disabilities face limited employment opportunities, communication barriers and insufficient social acceptance once they return to society.
“We must provide sustainable career pathways for them,” he said during the 2026 State Budget debate.
He further drew attention to community-based sports institutions, which have long nurtured local talent outside government systems.
“Many athletes in Sabah are nurtured by community sports institutions, not government systems,” he said.
He urged that budget allocations include mechanisms to assist these grassroots organisations, says “they deserve support to upgrade facilities, improve equipment and expand training programmes.”
On tourism and urban safety, Loi said attracting visitors requires a safe and well-managed city environment.
“Development of tourism is not just about attracting visitors, but ensuring they feel safe and confident to stay in Sabah,” he said.
He pointed out hazards in the Api-Api area such as child beggars, poor street-lighting, obstructed manholes and limited CCTV coverage.
Loi also raised concerns about Sabah Smart Parking fines, which can reach up to RM300, nearly 20 per cent of the minimum wage.
“Sabah Smart Parking fines ranging up to RM300 are a heavy burden.
“We need fairer starting rates and better app features to help users avoid penalties,” he said.
He also called for more green and monthly parking spaces to ease congestion and daily frustrations.
He also urged the Government to implement a people-centered approach, in line with the stated goal of “accelerating development for the people’s well-being.”
