TAWAU: Police have urged members of the public who uploaded viral videos of a road accident, alleged to be a hit-and-run at Batu 5, Jalan Apas on Thursday, to come forward to the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD).
One video showed a sedan leaving the scene, while another captured attempts to chase the vehicle. Tawau District Acting Police Chief DSP Champin Piuh said public cooperation is crucial to aid the investigation.
“We urge anyone who recorded or shared the accident videos to come forward to the District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at IPD Tawau,” he said.
According to police reports, the accident occurred around 12.30pm involving a Honda RXZ motorcycle and a Honda City sedan. Initial investigations revealed that the 58-year-old car driver from SMK Kinabutan was travelling towards Batu 3, while the 28-year-old motorcyclist from Batu 8 was heading into town.
“The incident happened when the car changed lanes from right to left and the motorcyclist suddenly entered the car’s path,” Champin said, adding both parties have since lodged official reports, although the car driver was initially seen fleeing the scene.
The accident left the motorcyclist with a broken right arm.
The case is being investigated under Section 52(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for failing to stop after an accident, and the Traffic Rules and Road Driving Regulations – LN 166/59 for dangerous overtaking.
