Kota Kinabalu: Former Chief Justice of Malaysia, Tun Richard Malanjum, said the Native Court system in Sabah requires significant improvements and upgrades to better serve indigenous communities.
Speaking at a forum, Malanjum highlighted that the Native Court, which deals with customary laws and traditions, remains marginalised, structurally weak and often sidelined compared to civil and syariah courts.
He stressed the need for legal reforms and stronger native enactments to enhance its jurisdiction, particularly as a strategy to address the ongoing issue of undocumented immigrants in Sabah.
The forum, organised by programme coordinator Remy Gunsalam, drew around 120 participants, including village heads, Native Chiefs (KAN and WKAN), former community leaders, members of the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), youth leaders, and members of the public, many affiliated with the Gerakan Anak Sabah movement.
