MIRI: Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has called for formal representation from Sarawak and Sabah in the proposed National Education Council (MPN) to ensure national education policies reflect local realities.
The Borneo Post reported him as saying that this would enable key issues such as rural-urban gaps, digital access, and linguistic and cultural diversity to be addressed effectively.
“Only in this way can we ensure that every ringgit and every reform truly transforms the experience of students, teachers, and parents,” Chiew said.
He described the MPN, set to be established under the 13th Malaysia Plan, as a crucial platform for integrated and outcome-based education reforms involving various stakeholders.
Chiew emphasised that education should not be shaped solely by a single ministry, adding that experts from science, sports, TVET, and child welfare should have a say in policy development.
He also highlighted the need for tailored education solutions for East Malaysia’s unique demographic and geographical challenges.
Chiew welcomed the federal government’s backing of the MPN initiative, noting that the Education and Higher Education ministries have submitted a Cabinet Memorandum on the proposal.
The council will involve multiple ministries and representatives from academia, industry, NGOs, and GLCs.
