KUCHING: Sarawak will file its own petition in the ongoing dispute involving Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), seeking a joint hearing with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) at the Federal Court,
Dayak Daily reported.
Sarawak Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Legal, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the move is to ensure all legal issues are fully and fairly examined.
She said the Federal Court’s decision to allow Petronas to refer key legal questions was appropriate given the complexity of issues, particularly those involving Sarawak laws.
She added that Sarawak will await Petronas’ petition, expected to be filed within 21 days, before submitting its own for both matters to be heard together.
Sarawak maintains that under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and related constitutional provisions, sovereignty over petroleum resources within the State’s boundaries lies with Sarawak and that certain federal laws no longer apply.
