Kuala Lumpur: A Hong Kong influencer has gone viral after reacting in disbelief to Malaysia’s fuel prices, calling them “very cheap” while pumping petrol at a local station.
The content creator, known as Torres Pit, shared a video on
Instagram showing him filling up his car and expressing surprise at the cost, even offering to pay for another person’s fuel.
The clip quickly gained attention online, especially among Malaysians.
In Malaysia, RON95 petrol is subsidised for citizens at RM1.99 per litre under the government’s Budi 95 programme, while foreigners are required to pay the unsubsidised rate of around RM3.27 per litre.
Despite the higher rate for non-citizens, the price is still significantly lower compared to Hong Kong, where fuel can exceed RM15 per litre, making Malaysia’s petrol prices appear far more affordable.
The video has sparked reactions online, with some netizens joking about fuel subsidies and others highlighting the benefits of the targeted subsidy system, which limits subsidised fuel to Malaysian citizens with a monthly cap of 300 litres.
