BEIJING: An Air China passenger flight from Hangzhou to Incheon was safely diverted to Shanghai on Saturday after a lithium battery caught fire in a passenger’s carry-on bag,
CNA reported.
The airline said the battery ignited in an overhead compartment during flight CA139, but the crew quickly brought the situation under control.
No injuries were reported among passengers or crew, and the fire was extinguished before it could spread inside the cabin.
The aircraft made an unscheduled landing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport as a safety precaution before continuing its journey.
Images shared by state media showed flames and smoke coming from an overhead bin as passengers attempted to help put out the fire mid-air.
