Kota Kinabalu: The Karate event of the 11 Sabah Games (Saga XI) concluded on Oct 12, marking an inspiring weekend for the Shotokan Karate Association Sabah (SKAS) as four of its athletes proudly represented Team Tawau, bringing home 1 gold and 1 bronze.
According to 8hannels News Portal, this gold medal marks Tawau’s first-ever Saga gold in Karate — a proud achievement delivered by Andryan Chong Sze Hoong, who triumphed in the Men’s Kumite -55kg category with a decisive 9–3 victory against Putatan.
The bronze was won in the team kata through the trio of Andryan, Yong Kai Le and Isen Chong
SKAS President Sensei Simon Chia highlighted the inspiring personal journey of Andryan, whose story embodies the perseverance and dedication that SKAS strives to nurture among its members:
“Andryan was born and raised in Tawau — originally from Kampung Kau Sing, Apas Road. He moved to Kota Kinabalu at the age of seven to continue his education and is currently pursuing a Diploma in Mechatronic Engineering at Politeknik Kota Kinabalu.
He began training under SKAS as a young student at just seven years old and has since grown into a versatile athlete, excelling in both Individual Kumite and Kata events. His progress is a true reflection of commitment, discipline, and the strong support from his parents and coaches.”
SKAS also expressed appreciation to Sensei Jackson Cyprianus for recognising SKAS athletes early on and providing them the opportunity to participate in the Sabah Games.
“We also wish to acknowledge the parents for their unwavering support and trust, which remain one of the key foundations of our athletes’ growth and progress,” Simon added.
Simon commended all athletes for their determination and teamwork, while emphasising the importance of values and unity within the sport:
“If we want to see Sports Karate progress, we must work together with integrity and professionalism. Progress is not just measured by medals, but by how we support one another — coaches, parents, athletes, and officials — in upholding respect, honesty, and discipline. When we move forward together with sincerity and unity, we strengthen not only our teams, but the spirit of Karate itself.”
