BEAUFORT: A 100 household heads impacted by floods in Lumadan received assistance from Muafakat Titipan Amal Isteri Wakil Rakyat Sabah (Mutiara GRS).
The aid distribution, comprising groceries and cash, was presented by Mutiara GRS Deputy Chairperson Datin Linda Ewit, representing Chairperson Datuk Seri Juliah Salag.
Lumadan Assemblyman Datuk Ruslan Muharam and Sipitang MP Datuk Matbali Musah, who is also Malaysian Cocoa Board Chairman, were present at the event.
Linda said the programme aimed to ease the burden of flood victims in the constituency and several other affected areas in the district.
“Similar aid has been distributed in other flood-hit areas previously and we hope this contribution will help lighten their burden,” she said.
Ruslan, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, said 4,206 households were affected by floods from Sept 8 - 18.
So far, 1,000 households have received assistance while the remaining 3,000 are being processed by the Beaufort District Disaster Committee.
He welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s call for better coordination between State and Federal government aid distribution.
“We can submit the list of damages to the District Office, then to the District Officer and subsequently to the State Secretary for action,” he said.
Ruslan noted that flood damage extended beyond roads to include mosques, suraus and homes with structural and furniture damage.
He said Federal aid channelled through the state government would expedite assistance to those genuinely in need.
