Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s deaf athletes will begin the defence of their overall title at the Malaysian Deaf Games (Sopma) in Kuching starting tomorrow (Friday) until Monday (Oct 6).
The State contingent is represented by 61 athletes with seven badminton players, 29 futsal players, 17 athletics and eight tenpin bowlers.
Sabah Deaf Sports Association president Spencer Soo Kok Heng, who accompanied the squad to Kuching on Wednesday, said they are hoping to win more than the 17 gold medals they achieved at the previous meet in 2023.
“Our main target is to defend the overall title and hopefully win more than 17 gold medals.
“We are unable to predict the gold medal target because five of our gold medal winners in the last meeting are not available on this trip. The three tenpin bowlers, one badminton player and one athlete are at the moment in Kuala Lumpur preparing for the Deaflympics scheduled next month in Japan,” he said.
Meanwhile, also in the flight on Wednesday was Sabah Sports Council deputy director Alissa Alha.
