Tawau needs drastic development phase
TAWAU: Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister-cum-Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Datuk Jimmy Wong said Tawau needs a drastic development phase without delay.

He said many gravel-roads at residential areas were unpaved for the past 15-20 years and many basic infrastructures should be developed to make Tawau as a tourism hub.

At the same time, there is a dire need to expand and develop the Tawau airport, including its amenities for the convenience of local and foreign tourists visiting Tawau and Semporna.

He was speaking at a Chinese New Year Open House at the multipurpose hall of Sabah Chinese High School here Saturday. More than 1,000 people turned up.

“We want to thank the State Government for the water dam project at Gudang Empat here which has been started and hopefully it would be fully completed as soon as possible in order to solve water supply problem and flood disaster faced by the people in Tawau.

“At this moment, a project on widening and deepening the Tawau river to prevent flash flood that hit the people almost four to five times a month during the rainy season will be started next month,” he said.

According to him, a new digital mammogram machine costing RM1.7 million is also expected to be installed this year in Tawau hospital while an Olympic swimming pool also will be built at the Tawau Sport Complex in the next two to three years.

Touching on the Pan Borneo Coastal Highway, Jimmy said the State Government will take it into consideration under the 12th Malaysia Plan in order to solve the traffic congestion at Jalan Apas and Jalan Utara.

He also urged the State Government to take an initiative to build a multi-storey car park near the Tawau fishery market-UTC Tawau as well as demolish the illegal building at the Sabindo Open Space to increase parking lots in Tawau.
