KINABATANGAN: Warisan President Shafie Apdal renewed his call for Sabahans to rally behind Sabah-based parties, as the struggle for state rights must be reflected not just in rhetoric but actual political practice.
Speaking to voters in Kg Paris, here, Shafie said Warisan’s decision to contest both seats was driven by the need to ensure that the call for Sabah political autonomy is translated into real representation.

Particularly at parliamentary level, where Sabah voices are often diluted by national party interests.
“What we have been saying all this while is that Sabah must have its own voice. That voice should not only be heard in the state assembly, but also in Parliament.”
Shafie said Warisan does not reject cooperation with national parties outright, but said such cooperation must be carefully defined to protect Sabah’s interests.
He pointed out that Warisan currently works with Pakatan Harapan at the federal level to ensure political stability and good governance nationwide, but that Sabah must retain the right to be led by Sabah parties.
He cited Sarawak led by state parties, Kelantan and Terengganu (administered by PAS alone) and Johor led by Umno without power-sharing arrangements with other parties.
“If they can practise this in their own states, why should Sabah be treated differently?” he asked, adding that political consistency was important.
“What we practise must be in line with what we say. We cannot keep talking about Sabah rights but act differently when it comes to political power.”
Shafie also defended Warisan’s choice of candidates in both constituencies, stressing that they were selected based on experience, local roots and familiarity with Sabah issues, rather than political convenience.
