Kota Kinabalu: Two people were fined during a cleanliness enforcement operation at Lido Square on Friday by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) Regulatory Unit’s Solid Waste Management Department.
The operation, is part of the DBKK’s daily “Ops Bersih” enforcement activities, targets littering violations under the Kota Kinabalu City (Anti-Littering) By-Laws 1984 (Amendment 2005).

The by-laws were established to increase public awareness about maintaining city cleanliness and to discourage littering in public areas.
Common violations include discarding cigarette butts, tissues, drink bottles and food containers in public places. Both individuals and companies that improperly dispose of waste are subject to enforcement action.
Offenders face on-the-spot compounds ranging from RM30 to RM500, depending on the type and amount of waste disposed. Alternatively, they may be issued summonses requiring court appearances.
Those convicted in court may be fined up to RM10, 000, imprisoned for up to three years or required to perform community service under a Mandatory Attendance Order for four hours daily for up to three months.
In a statement, here, DBKK said that “Ops Bersih” will continue to ensure residents maintain their responsibility for keeping Kota Kinabalu clean. The public are reminded to dispose of waste properly and avoid polluting the city.
The enforcement action follows a similar crackdown by Penampang Municipal Council, which recently issued compounds amounting to RM5, 500 to 11 Taman Suria Apartment tenants in Penampang for littering violations.
The offenders received the maximum compound permitted under the council’s Uniform (Anti-Litter) By-laws 2010, after public complaints about garbage accumulating in common areas of the property.
