KUNAK: Claims that foreigners are monopolising trading spots at the town’s weekend Tamu Market have been dismissed by Assistant Minister of Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy and Kunak assemblyman Datuk Seri Anil Sandhu, who said inspections found the vendors to be locals.
Anil said he had received complaints alleging that foreign nationals were conducting business at the market, allegedly limiting opportunities for local traders. However, he rejected the claims after a visit to the Tamu on Sunday.

“During my visit to the Tamu on Sunday, I found that the hawkers and traders are locals. Therefore, there is no issue of foreigners monopolising this market area,” he said.
He also cautioned local traders and hawkers against renting out their business licences or trading lots to foreign nationals, urging them instead to fully utilise the facilities and opportunities provided by the government.
Anil added that various initiatives have been introduced to support local income generation through the Tamu Market, including upgrades to improve comfort and convenience for traders.
Meanwhile, Kunak District Council executive officer Mohd Nazri Pintal said the local authority regularly monitors traders at the Kunak Tamu Market to ensure compliance with established regulations.
The Kunak Tamu Market remains a popular destination, offering a wide range of goods including fresh agricultural produce, seafood, local food items, small and medium enterprise products, handicrafts, and bundled goods.
