Kota Kinabalu: The Double Six tragedy did more than claim lives – it set off a chain of political and constitutional events that further defined Sabah’s place in Malaysia, said Daily Express Chief Editor Datuk James Sarda, JP.

James said Sabah was only 13 years old in the federation on June 6, 1976, when it became an orphan as Tun Mohd Fuad Stephens, the person who brought the Sate into the Federation, was gone.

“Not only that, four of his ‘children’ also went with him – Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Chong Tain Vun and Datuk Darius Binion.

“They represented a newer generation of leaders than Fuad’s who could have charted a different path for Sabah,” he told a packed audience at the Bicara Negarawan forum hosted by the Ministry of National Unity and the National Archives in honour of the late Tun Fuad Stephens.
