Tenom: The agricultural sector has the potential to become a modern and viable career, particularly among the younger generation in interior areas.

This was demonstrated by the participation of 160 youths in the Social Unity Programme organised by Youth Development, Sports Development and Creative Economy Ministry, which took place over three days and two nights at SMK Entabuan here.

Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said the programme focuses on developing youth skills through agricultural training, the utilisation of modern technology and exposure to career opportunities in the agri-food industry.

According to him, the unique feature of the programme this time is the emphasis on modern agricultural activities, including the use of drones in the agricultural sector, alongside high-quality coffee production training in collaboration with Giatmara Tenom and Agricultural Training Centre.

“This programme provides exposure to young people regarding career opportunities and training in the agricultural field so that they view this sector as a future industry capable of generating an income,” he said when met at the programme at SMK Entabuan, Tenom.

Jamawi said such continuous efforts are vital to open up more opportunities for the younger generation to venture into modern agriculture, thereby strengthening the economy of rural communities.
