LABUAN: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) chief here, Walther Philip Micheal has suggested a “rotation system” in the appointment of a Labuan Senator so that every community will stand a chance to hold the position and serve the island Federal Territory.
“Such a move will also reflect a more inclusive and genuine power sharing concept among the communities as all have been given recognition,” said Walther.
He added this approach will also make our multi -culturalism and unity appear more meaningful and not mere slogans during speeches.
“We need to translate to action what had been claimed.”
Walther was pointing at the continued appointment os senatorship from only the same community since Labuan was given a quota when it became a Federal Territory in1984.
According to him, there is a sizeable number of KDM ,Chinese and mixed races, and many are qualified and deserve a chance and be a symbol of pride for their community.
“They have also been contributing to Labuan.”
He said in other states other communities were given the opportunity. From Sabah recently a State DAP leader was appointed.
In Labuan, the Member of Parliament was either from Umno, Warisan or Bersatu.
In 2023, the tradition was broken when an outsider from Sabah was appointed to the post, triggering an outcry. The other important post of Chairman of Labuan Corporation is also from the same community.
The post of Senator here as been vacant for few months. There has been no official announcement of a new appointment.
Walther had also recently expressed regret over KDMs, Indians snubbed in the appointment of Labuan Corporation Advisory Council members.
