Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old man was fined RM6,500 or jailed eight months by the Magistrate’s Court here for keeping two stolen handphones.

Nathaniel Chan Yie Yien pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing the offence in front of Public Bank at Jalan Tapikong, Donggongon New Township, Penampang, at about 11am on May 18.

The two phones were an iPhone 13 Mini and an iPhone 12 Pro Max belonging to one Md Putra Vadleyshah Mdd Azmi.

cInspector Yusdi Basri, prosecuting, informed the court that police detained Chan in front of the bank and found the two iPhones in his possession during an inspection.

In another case, a 65-year-old man was jailed four months and fined RM1,000 or two months’ jail for stealing a blanket from a shopping mall outlet.

Abdirauf Asakil pleaded guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to stealing a cotton throw blanket worth RM139.90 from Kaison at Imago Shopping Mall at about 1.53pm on May 22.

He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 10 years’ jail and a fine on conviction.

The court heard from the prosecution that Abdirauf took the grey blanket and discarding the security sensor attached to the item.

He then placed the blanket into a paper bag and walked out of the premises without paying.

His actions were detected by the store’s employees through CCTV footage and he was detained in front of the shop after exiting with the item.

The court ordered him to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.
