TONGOD: Sabahans are encouraged to revive rice cultivation in line with Kaamatan’s origins as Malaysia faces a potential rice shortage within six months.
Datuk Masiung Banah warned that global conflicts, export restrictions, and El Niño may disrupt imports and drive prices up, while national stocks may only last until year-end.
With Sabah importing 400,000 tonnes annually but producing just 120,000 tonnes, he urged locals to reduce reliance on imports and tap into government support and subsidies to grow their own rice.
