STREETLIGHT maintenance and upgrading works along federal roads across Sabah are being carried out in stages, with priority given to high-risk accident areas, poorly lit locations, and verified public complaints.
Assistant Minister of Works and Utilities Datuk Limus Jury said the phased approach is aimed at improving road safety while addressing the most urgent cases of non-functioning streetlights.
Responding to a question from Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong, he said the works are funded by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Works Malaysia based on current needs and priorities.
“For 2024 and 2025, RM8 million was allocated and spent each year on maintenance and repair works across Sabah. For 2026, the allocation has been increased to RM17.95 million,” he said at the legislative assembly.
He noted that the higher allocation reflects the government’s continued efforts to tackle the issue, particularly in critical areas where faulty lighting poses risks to road users.
Limus stressed that streetlights along federal roads are assets owned by the Federal Government and that their maintenance is fully funded through federal allocations.
“As such, the issue of the State Government bearing the cost does not arise,” he said.
He added that cooperation with the Federal Government will continue to be strengthened to ensure better coordination in implementation, while additional funding will be sought when necessary to maintain service levels and enhance road safety.
