RECORS from the Penampang Municipal Council (MPP) show that 11 squatter settlements at high risk of fire have been identified in Kapayan.
State Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister Datuk Maijol Mahap said the settlements are located on land areas, along drains and on hilly terrain.
“Most of these areas have high population density, closely packed and unplanned housing layouts, and use building materials that are easily flammable.
“In addition, narrow and limited access routes can affect the efficiency of rescue and fire brigade operations in the event of a fire.
“MPP conducts continuous monitoring and issues notices under by-laws related to building and safety.
“Enforcement is carried out in stages, including warning notices, extensions and legal action against landowners,” he said when responding to a question from Kapayan Assemblyman Chin Tek Ming.
Maijol added that the State Government, through the relevant ministry, will continue to collaborate with involved agencies on preventive measures, control and follow-up actions to ensure residents’ safety.
