SANDAKAN: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) will coordinate assistance for victims of the Kampung Bahagia fire in line with plans by the State Government.
Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the ministry would meet Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor soon to discuss the types of aid to be channelled.
“We have initiatives to assist the victims, but we do not want to pre-empt the state government’s plans. We will meet and coordinate these efforts,” she said.
She spoke to reporters during a visit to the affected village and at the presentation of donations from the Sime Darby Foundation at the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at Dewan Rumah Warga Tua Sri Harapan on Tuesday.
Nancy said her ministry, through the Social Welfare Department (JKM), had spent RM900,000 to provide food and drinks for nearly 2,000 victims placed in eight evacuation centres from April 19 to May 2.
She also expressed appreciation to JKM personnel for managing the centres since the incident.
JKM played a key role in coordinating PPS operations, including registering victims through its Disaster Info System, distributing essential supplies and providing three daily meals.
Beyond basic needs, JKM also provided emotional support through crisis intervention and psychological services.
These were carried out by JKM psychologists and support teams at several centres, including SMK Batu Sapi, SK Gas, Dewan PPR Batu Sapi, SK Karamunting and Dewan Sibuga from April 20 to 23, 2026.
A total of 262 victims received psychosocial support aimed at stabilising emotions, reducing trauma and aiding recovery.
The National Welfare Foundation (YKN), an agency under KPWKM, contributed RM200,000 in “Kasih Prihatin” aid to the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee Fund for distribution to affected families.
In addition to cash aid, YKN also distributed care packages containing food, stationery and colouring kits for children, as well as essentials such as clothing, milk and baby diapers.
The Sime Darby Foundation contributed hygiene kits, mattresses and pillows to the victims. The collaboration reflects continued corporate support for communities affected by disasters.
