KOTA KINABALU: Pantai Dalit assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya has urged urgent state action over the overburdened Kayu Madang landfill and worsening coastal pollution in Tuaran.
He said the landfill, which serves multiple West Coast districts and receives about 800 tonnes of waste daily, is nearing capacity and entering its final phase.
Jasnih highlighted persistent foul odour, fire incidents and health risks from emissions, as well as land-use conflicts affecting nearby communities and development.
He also warned that plastic waste flowing into the Mengkabong–Gayang coastline is damaging marine ecosystems and fishing livelihoods.
“This is no longer an isolated issue, but one involving public health, public safety, environmental sustainability and the future development of the State,” he said.
He called for better waste management planning, a new landfill site, stricter waste separation and long-term solutions such as waste-to-energy technology.
