Tuaran: Sabah is set to further strengthen its food security with the launch of the “Kebun Dapur App”, a digital platform expected to be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Jamawi Jaafar said the app represents a strategic move to modernise the marketing ecosystem for agricultural and livestock products at community level.
He said the platform would provide real-time information on food supply across Sabah, allowing users to check current production levels such as vegetables in Kundasang or fish like tilapia anywhere in the state.
Farmers would also be able to input expected output in advance, while buyers can place direct orders through the app, creating a more efficient and transparent supply chain without intermediaries.
Jamawi said the initiative is expected to reduce price distortions often caused by middlemen, where farm produce is bought cheaply in rural areas and sold at higher prices in urban markets.
He added that the digital approach would help increase income for farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen while reducing food waste through better supply-demand planning.
The “Kebun Dapur” programme also encourages household-level self-sufficiency, promoting backyard farming activities such as poultry rearing and vegetable planting to help ease the cost of living.
He revealed that Sabah currently relies on up to 95pc imported livestock feed, which significantly affects production costs when global prices rise.
To address this, the state is providing hands-on training programmes, including egg-laying chicken farming and locally produced feed training conducted directly in the field rather than in hotels.
In addition, collection centres for agricultural and livestock produce are being activated in every parliamentary area to facilitate distribution of surplus goods.
