Kota Kinabalu: A 42-year-old man was fined RM1,600 or jailed three months for assaulting a petrol station worker over a RON95 subsidy issue.
Rodden Lo Tze Sheng pleaded guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to voluntarily causing hurt to one Nicholas Michael Rogers at 1.40pm on April 11 this year at a petrol station in Jalan Bundusan, Penampang.
The offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both, on conviction.
The court heard that the incident occurred when Lo attempted to purchase subsidised RON95 fuel using another person’s MyKad.
When questioned repeatedly by the cashier, the ownership of the identity card, Lo refused to explain and became agitated.
He then raised his voice and threw a bell on the counter towards a glass panel twice in anger.
When the victim attempted to retrieve the bell, Lo suddenly struck him.
The victim sustained injuries to his upper lip, left shoulder and back.
Investigations revealed that the incident was captured on CCTV and witnessed by three eyewitnesses.
Unrepresented, Lo appealed for a lenient sentence, citing family difficulties, including a child with autism and a wife suffering from depression.
He also told the court that the MyKad used belonged to his wife.
The prosecution sought a deterrent sentence.
In another case, a 41-year-old woman was fined RM1,500 or one month’s jail for buying an illegal public lottery ticket without a licence.
Nurjanna Mohd Anuar pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to the offence committed on Dec 11, 2025, at 3.10pm, at Lorong Inanam Point 3, Inanam, following an operation conducted by police.
The offence under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to six months, or both, on conviction.
The court heard from the prosecution that acting on information, a police team went to the location and spotted a woman, later identifed as Nurjanna, acting suspiciously.
Police identified themselves and arrested her before seizing a Nokia mobile phone, a mobile printer, a slip of paper printed with numbers and letters, and about RM80 in cash used in the activity.
Inspectors Mohamad Hamidi Mohamad Hamzah and Yusdi Basri prosecuted.
Meanwhile, with reference to our report entitled “Mental check for body parts case suspect” dated April 16, 2026 (Page 2), the prosecution did not object to the application for the accused to be referred for psychiatric observation, contrary to the earlier report.
