Kundasang: While the rest of Sabah and elsewhere in Malaysia is experiencing extremely hot weather, Panalaban Substation at Taman Kinabalu witnessed icicles being formed on vegetation along the slopes of Mount Kinabalu at 11,000ft on Thursday.
Panalaban Sub-Station Superintendent, Julaimin Bin Kamin, posted the incident on Facebook said the phenomenon was recorded at an altitude of 3,272.7 metres above sea level.
According to him, icicles are a natural phenomenon that occurs periodically in the high altitude area, especially when the weather is clear, dry and the temperature drops significantly at night until early morning. It happened throughout the week.
“These conditions cause a significant drop in temperature in the high altitude area, resulting in the formation of ice on the surface of plants and the environment of the Panalaban base camp,” he said.
All climbers, mountain guides, porters and staff in the Panalaban area are advised to wear clothing that is appropriate for the cold weather; maintain body hydration levels and follow safety instructions from the management and staff of Sabah Parks.
He said Sabah Parks would continue to monitor weather and temperature developments to ensure the safety of visitors and staff at all times.
