TAWAU: A family’s relief at surviving a house fire turned to profound grief when their father suddenly collapsed and passed away while being rushed to hospital, moments after successfully preventing the fire from destroying their home.

This poignant account was shared by Muhammad Syarmeen Nur Hafiz, 21, the son of the late Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin, 53. Syarmeen had personally helped his father battle the flames to stop them from spreading through their residence.

According to Jasmin’s third child, his father was confirmed dead at around 2am on Wednesday by attending doctors at Tawau District Hospital. He was informed that the deceased had likely suffered sudden heart complications triggered by excessive smoke inhalation.

“The fire broke out at around midnight while we were asleep. We were woken up by my uncle, who was the first to notice the flames spreading in the upstairs living room,” he said when met at Kampung Sungai Gading Wakuba, Mile 17, Jalan Apas here Wednesday.
