Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s plastics industry says it has been unfairly labelled as doing little for the environment and is pushing back against misconceptions, stressing that manufacturers are already driving recycling initiatives and sustainability projects.
Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) Sabah branch chairman Liaw Hen Kong, who is also the managing director and co-founder of Life Water Industries Sdn Bhd, said many people criticise plastics without realising the industry has already adopted circular economy practices.
“People say plastics are bad, but they continue to use them every day. The problem is miscommunication. Recycling systems and closed-loop solutions are already in the market, but many consumers, NGOs, and even government agencies are not aware,” he said, recently.
Liaw said Life Water Industries has long been running sustainability projects, including the production of 100 per cent recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.
