BEIJING: A group of Malaysian tourists visiting China has come under fire online after reportedly arranging for 1,200 parcels to be delivered to their hotel for collection.
The backlash followed a video shared by the travel agency handling the group on Xiaohongshu, carrying the caption: “When Malaysians visit China, is shopping all you do?”
The footage showed hotel staff sorting and distributing hundreds of packages piled up in the lobby and at the front desk, while one tour member said they had purchased more than 50 items on Taobao.
Although the video has since been deleted, the incident triggered discussion on social media about the practice of sending online purchases directly to hotels during trips to China.
Many Malaysian users shared shopping tips and delivery guides, highlighting the convenience of having purchases waiting for collection upon arrival.
Several commenters said receiving a small number of parcels at hotels was generally acceptable, but argued that handling more than 1,000 packages placed an unfair burden on staff.
“This is so excessive. Unless they paid an extra fee when booking the hotel, this is truly unreasonable,” wrote one netizen, while others described the reported 1,200 deliveries as excessive and beyond the normal scope of hotel services.
