Kota Kinabalu: The Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) outbreak has severely affected Sabah’s Tagal system, causing significant losses as thousands of fish, particularly pelian (Tor spp.), have died within a short span.
The outbreak significantly affected the local community, which depends on tagal – a traditional, community-based river conservation practice among indigenous communities in Sabah for both food and income.
Two tagal areas in Ranau and Tambunan alone recorded losses of some 1,200kg of fish due to the outbreak.
In RANAU, about 1,000kg of pelian were reported dead within six days following the outbreak at the Kg Luanti Baru Tagal.
