LABUAN: The operator of Labuan Commercial Liberty Port, Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM) has appealed for the inclusion of duty-free Labuan as a “Customs Approved Port” for the trans shipment of cigarettes and liquor to external markets.
Its General Manager Chi On Keong said these goods were now allowed trans-shipment at designated ports of Sandakan in Sabah and Senari in Sarawak and extension of the facility to Labuan would help boost Labuan’s economy.
In an email calling for the review of the issue to the co-chairman of the Labuan Task Force Datuk Mohd Husni Mohamad Salleh who is the chairman of Labuan Corporation, Chi said:
“From a national economic and strategic standpoint , it is timely to review whether Labuan could also be considered for a strictly controlled and federally supervised trans-shipment framework , aligned with the same safeguards applied in Sandakan and Senari.”
