Sabah welcomes more Petronas collaboration

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor welcomed Petronas’ commitment to exploring further collaboration aimed at expanding Sabah’s participation in the oil and gas industry.

Petronas President and Group CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz briefed him on potential strategic partnerships and the current status of Petronas’ operations in the State at Menara Kinabalu, Tuesday.

Tengku Muhammad also updated the Chief Minister on Petronas’s ongoing relief efforts to support the State Government in assisting communities recently affected by floods in Sabah.

The Petronas delegation included Executive Vice-President and CEO of Gas and Maritime Business Datuk Adif Zulkifli; Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) Senior Vice-President Datuk Bacho Pilong; Vice-President of Group Strategic Relations and Communications Ir Norafizal Mat Saad and senior officials.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the two projects together would add 28MWac of new power generation capacity, helping to stabilise electricity supply in Sabah.
At a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Musa Aman, Tengku Muhammad reaffirmed commitment to deepening Petronas strategic partnership with the Sabah Government in developing the State’s energy industry.

He said the collaboration would support Sabah’s aspirations to advance its energy sector.

“Alhamdulillah, we had the opportunity to brief (Head of State) on Petronas’ latest activities in Sabah and the response was very positive with a call for the partnership to be further intensified,” he said.

Tengku Muhammad said the visit’s objective was to update the State’s leadership on the latest developments in Petronas’ activities and joint initiatives with the State Government, including its existing joint venture with SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd (SMJE).

“We also touched on the achievements and performance of the joint ventures that have been carried out with the Sabah Government,” he said.

He added that several new joint ventures had been identified and would be realised in the near term, guided by a mutual benefit, win-win principle.

He said developing the eastern region of Sabah remained a key focus of the partnership, with Petronas committed to supporting the state government’s industrial development goals.
