Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Indian Association (SIA) expressed strong support and appreciation for the proposed establishment of an Indian Consulate in Sabah, as recently highlighted in the media.
In a statement on Monday, the association said that opening an Indian Consulate in Sabah represents a significant vote of confidence in the State’s economic progress, strategic location, and growing importance within regional and international trade networks.

It also reflects the strengthening of diplomatic and economic relations between Malaysia and India.
“Sabah’s expanding economy, particularly in downstream industries, palm oil, logistics, tourism and port development, offers vast opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
The presence of an Indian Consulate in Sabah will strengthen trade and investment ties between Sabah and India; facilitate business-to-business engagement and market access; enhance tourism flows between India and Sabah; promote educational, cultural, and professional exchanges; and provide efficient consular services to Indian nationals and the local Indian community in Sabah,” the statement read.
SIA noted that the Indian community in Sabah has contributed meaningfully to the State’s socio-economic development for generations.
The establishment of a consulate will further institutionalise engagement, deepen people-to-people relations, and support future collaborations.
The association believes this development will benefit not only the Indian community but also Sabah’s broader economic landscape and international connectivity.
“We respectfully call upon all stakeholders to view this initiative as a progressive step toward strengthening bilateral relations and promoting inclusive growth for Sabah.
The Sabah Indian Association stands ready to cooperate fully in supporting initiatives that enhance Malaysia–India relations for the mutual benefit of both nations.”
