KOTA MARUDU: A woman in her 50s suffered leg injury after falling into a drain at the night market, here, Tuesday afternoon, calling into question the obligation of local authorities, in this case the Kota Marudu District Council.
The victim was rescued by members of the public who were at the scene before being taken away by her son in a vehicle, believed to the hospital for treatment.

It is understood that she is not the first victim, as similar incidents have reportedly occurred several times at the same location, according to witnesses.
The night market, located near the district Fire and Rescue Station, operates daily from 3pm to 8pm, offering a variety of goods, including vegetables, seafood, chicken, traditional cakes, drinks and grilled items.
A trader who wished to be known only as Lin, in her 40s, said victims who fall into the drain are often seen in pain, believed to have been struck by concrete slabs, adding that the drain is quite deep and dirty.
She said the area is commonly used as a main walkway for visitors purchasing vegetables, fish and traditional cakes, making it a high-traffic route in the market.

Another visitor, who only wanted to be known as Jusita, in her 30s, said she feels increasingly worried and unsafe passing through the area.
She urged the authorities to take the matter seriously, stressing that it is a public safety issue.
