‘Unfriendly stand shocking’
Labuan Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Datuk Dahlif Singh
LABUAN: The Labuan Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is shocked over the unfriendly stand of some quarters over the proposal to set up an Indian Consulate in Sabah.

Its Chairman Datuk Dahlif Singh said the concerns highlighted by these few were based on flawed reasoning and smacked of prejudice.

He said India is on course to becoming the world’s largest economy and now ranks behind the United State and Chine.

“This could bring various benefits to the State and should be welcomed and supported.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the two projects together would add 28MWac of new power generation capacity, helping to stabilise electricity supply in Sabah.
“If it is unwanted in Sabah, Sarawak will grab the opportunity.”

He noted that those opposing it claim it would be a threat to the State’s immigration when there is no link whatsoever.

Dahlif also said the role of a consulate was misunderstood by some. The consulate helps in resolving issues related to their citizens and issuing or renewing documents such as visas, passes as well as sorting other matters and providing information for studies, trade, etc.

“Many Sabahans could also benefit as they do not have to fly to Kuala Lumpur to the High Commission. Even those from Sarawak will find this convenient. There are spillover benefits here,” said Dahlif

Dahlif also found it strange that negative views were not expressed when other consulates were established in Sabah.

Among nations having a consulate in the State include China, Japan, Indonesia and lately Korea.
