DAP on Shafie’s change of stand

SANDAKAN: DAP Strategic Director Liew Chin Tong highlighted contradictions in Shafie Apdal’s political stance, ahead of the Nov 29 state election in Sri Tanjong.

Speaking in support of Pakatan Harapan–DAP candidate Philip Yap, Liew said voters’ choice was not just about electing a local assemblyman but also about “deciding the future direction of Sabah.”

Liew cited three key periods in Shafie’s political career to illustrate his point. 

He said Shafie left Umno in 2015 following his removal from government positions amid the 1MDB scandal, helping establish Warisan in East Malaysia.

“The situation in 2025 is very different. Shafie is now part of the Federal Unity Government, yet he tries to force-fit the 2015 narrative onto today’s reality,” Liew said,

accusing him of exploiting past anti-establishment sentiment for electoral gain.

Liew said Shafie spent two and a half years trying to become Prime Minister, seeking to expand Warisan into Peninsular Malaysia and replace DAP at the federal level.

“Today, he attacks the Federal Government and criticises DAP, which contradicts his ambitions just a few years ago.”

In January 2022, former DAP assemblymen Justin Wong and Calvin Chong quit the party, allegedly to create a perception that DAP was collapsing nationwide, paving

the way for Shafie’s plans.

“Shafie’s current anti-Federal rhetoric is a self-contradiction. It’s effectively a slap to his own face,” Liew said. He urged the voters to consider these inconsistencies  when making their choice in Sri Tanjong, saying that the election is about “both local representation and the broader future of Sabah
