Kota Kinabalu: Three Sabah-based social enterprises are preventing agricultural and urban waste from polluting rivers and landfills by transforming discarded materials into commercial products now supplying major hotels across the State.

“Farmers traditionally burn corn husks after harvest or throw them into rivers,” said Kota Marudu’s Corn Husk Craft Community Manager, Farni Millis.

“Before this, I never thought twice about throwing things away. Now when I see waste being thrown away carelessly, I automatically think what can we make from this,” she said at a sharing session hosted by Ruang Tamu Ekosistem in Alamesra, here, recently.

Ruang Tamu Ekosistem brought together collaborative works by Corn Husk Craft, Upcycled Shack and Bayu Bamboo, three grassroots initiatives that are tackling environmental pollution while creating sustainable income for rural communities by collecting materials that would otherwise be burned, dumped or left to rot.
