SANDAKAN: Youth, Sports and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan has called for immediate improvements to several facilities at the Sandakan Sports Complex to ensure sports amenities in the district are maintained at the best level and remain comfortable for users.
He said priority would be given to the gymnastics hall and swimming pool, which will be included in the ministry’s scope of work this year.
According to him, the swimming pool, which is currently without a roof, should receive special attention and be listed under the tender scope to enhance user comfort, particularly for athletes undergoing intensive daily training.
Nizam acknowledged that several facilities require repairs but face financial constraints, adding that the ministry will seek allocations from both the State and Federal Governments to ensure sports facilities in Sabah remain in good condition.
He said sports complexes reflect the ministry’s image and that he has taken the approach of conducting on-site visits to assess the actual condition of facilities, adding that Sandakan has produced high-performing athletes at national and international levels, and he hopes those preparing for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) mid-year will be able to contribute gold medals to Sabah.
