Kota Kinabalu: Twelve individuals were issued compounds by the City Hall (DBKK) Regulatory Unit’s Solid Waste Management Department during an enforcement operation targeting littering in the city centre on Monday.
Recently, two people were also fined during a cleanliness enforcement operation at Lido Square by the team.
The Ops Bersih is an ongoing daily enforcement initiative by DBKK to ensure the public remains vigilant and takes responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in the city.
The latest was conducted in several key locations, including Asia City, Segama, KK Plaza, Jalan Gaya, Jalan Pantai and Bandaran Berjaya.
The enforcement action was carried out under the City of Kota Kinabalu By-Laws (Anti-Littering) 1984 Amendment 2005, an operation conducted daily to raise public awareness on the importance of maintaining city cleanliness and to educate individuals who pollute the urban environment.
The operation targeted individuals or companies littering or disposing of waste in public areas. Common offences detected included disposal of cigarette butts, tissues, beverage bottles and food containers.
Under the by-laws, offenders are given the option to pay a “Compound on the Spot” fine ranging from RM30 to RM500, depending on the type and amount of litter, or to appear in court through a “Summon on the Spot.”
If convicted in court, offenders can be fined up to RM10,000, imprisoned for up to three years, or sentenced to a Compulsory Attendance Order requiring community service of four hours daily for a period not exceeding three months.
The public is reminded to play their part in keeping the city environment clean by refraining from littering or polluting public areas.
