MEMBAKUT: Flooding has affected the old town area here for more than a week, rendering the road at Kampung Bandau impassable to small vehicles.
District Police Chief Superintendent Wong Leong Meng on Monday morning said the water flow in Kampung Bandau remained strong, making it unsafe for vehicles to pass, although the overall situation is still under control.
Several premises in the old town were forced to close due to the flooding, including Sekolah Kebangsaan Pekan, the Post Office, and SK Kampung Brunei, all of which were inundated.
While floodwaters have begun to recede since Saturday, several areas remain submerged. The road leading to Kampung Brunei is still flooded and unsuitable for use by small vehicles.

Road users travelling to Kuala Penyu have been advised to take an alternative route via the bypass road at Kampung Tahak, continuing through Kampung Pimping before proceeding to Kuala Penyu and Menumbok, Supt Wong said.
He also urged residents affected by the floods to remain cautious and to ensure that children do not play in floodwaters, particularly in Kampung Brunei, due to the risk posed by dangerous animals such as snakes and crocodiles.
The recent sighting of two crocodiles has raised concern among nearby villagers, serving as a warning of the reptiles’ presence and the potential danger they pose.
“Parents should closely supervise their children and not allow them to play during floods, as the conditions are hazardous and may also lead to the spread of disease,” he said.
According to sources, Kampung Sinoku and Kampung Baitam are also frequently affected by flooding when the water level of the Membakut River rises.
Residents have been advised to exercise caution when moving through flooded areas in these villages as water levels remain high.
