SANDAKAN: A RM39 million project to build two new hostel blocks at Sandakan Polytechnic has reached 12 per cent progress and is on track for completion by September 2027, providing beds for up to 700 additional students.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said the male and female hostels were about 20 days behind schedule due to erratic weather, but stressed that overall progress remained under control.

He was speaking after a site visit on Monday, during which officials flagged ageing plumbing and water supply constraints at the 17-year-old campus that will be addressed alongside the new construction.
Zambry said the government would phase in upgrades to basic infrastructure to ensure students can move into the hostels without disruption once the project is completed.
Touching on policy, he said proposals under the 13th Malaysia Plan to streamline education pathways, including Form Six and matriculation, would require legislative changes and be implemented gradually over five years to avoid disrupting students’ academic progression.
