KOTA KINABALU: An assistant engineer pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Thursday to two corruption charges involving RM200,000 allegedly received from a construction company linked to his cousin.
Aldey Kangit, 44, who was attached to the Kiulu Sub-District Office, is accused of abusing his position to obtain RM75,998.10 on Aug 22, 2023, at the Kiulu Sub-District Office.
He faces a second charge of allegedly receiving RM142,490.50 in a similar manner on Sept 13, 2023, at the same office.
The offences are framed under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ jail and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus fixed Feb 23 for pre-trial case management, granted bail of RM20,000 with two local sureties, and ordered Aldey to report to MACC every two months, surrender his passport and refrain from contacting prosecution witnesses.
