TAMPARULI: Safety concerns at the low-crossing bridge in Tamparuli have prompted immediate remedial plans, with the road set to close for up to three months to allow strengthening works following public concern online.
In a
Facebook post on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister cum Works and Utilities Minister Joachim Gunsalam said he was represented by his political secretary Bonaventure Boniface to inspect the bridge and hold technical discussions on site.

He said short-term measures include installing three to four sets of I-beams by road concessionaire Globinaco using existing funds, after which the bridge will reopen with a strict vehicle limit of under five tonnes.
For the long term, he said funding for a new bridge had been approved by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry last year, with design work ongoing this year and tenders expected to open in October 2026.
The project, expected to be completed in 2029, involves a higher, permanent twin bridge built alongside the existing structure, proposed to be retained as a tourism feature, with follow-up decisions to be coordinated through district committees and post-Cabinet meetings, he said.
