Desmond was found taking the drug on Oct 16 this year after testing positive at the police station here. He has four prior conviction records for taking the drug.
He committed the offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) which punishable under Section 39C(2) of DDA provides for between seven and 13 years, and whipping at least three strokes, on conviction.
The court ordered Desmond to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest and to be placed under police supervision for two years after completing the jail sentence.
Earlier, during mitigation, Desmond who was not represented, asked for a lenient sentence saying that he has two children and wife to look after.
He also promised that once released, he would not repeat the offence.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazriel Fardiansyah Abdul Kadir urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on the grounds that it was a serious offence.
