Kota Kinabalu: An integrated task force has been set up to address issues affecting tourism in Semporna, says State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin.
He said the task force headed by his Assistant Minister Dr Andi Rizal would submit reports to the Ministry every two weeks.

“This is to allow more focused and accountable action to address Semporna’s tourism challenges, rather than reacting to problems as they arise.
“Sabah faces key challenges such as misalignment of authority between Motac (federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture), local authorities and district offices, as well as unlicensed or illegal operations, safety, hygiene and tourism infrastructure management.
“Our approach is based on the principle: sit down together, we can work together,” he said.
The task force will involve multiple agencies, including Motac, enforcement agencies, the Malaysian Maritime Department (Sabah region), Sabah Ports and Harbours Department, Local Government and Housing Ministry, Esscom, Tourism Malaysia Sabah, Semporna District Office, Sabah Parks and other relevant bodies.
Jafry said the task force’s goal is to create a more structured, safe and integrity-driven tourism governance system, providing Motac with a strong foundation to oversee the sector effectively.
“Failure to address these issues will have significant repercussions on Sabah’s tourism industry.
“Full commitment from all parties is crucial to resolve these matters for the benefit of both the industry and the public,” he said.
As part of immediate measures, Jaffry said the task force has already begun ad hoc operations, including dialogue sessions with tourism industry players in Semporna.
Jafry confirmed that he will personally visit the area to ensure practical and coordinated solutions are implemented.
“The pending issues will be addressed with a more integrated, firm and solution-oriented approach, to restore stability and sustainability to Semporna’s tourism industry,” he said.
Previously, there had been many complaints and reports on the rubbish problem in Semporna, long regarded as a gateway to diving and food havens.
There have also been a number of concerns about security raised over the years.
