TAMBUNAN: Residents of several villages here voiced hope that the upcoming selection of Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) will be conducted through open voting rather than political appointments, as practised previously.
They said past experience showed that politically driven appointments had created various problems and dissatisfaction among villagers.
Among the main issues frequently raised was the failure of some appointed village leaders to genuinely listen to the people, coupled with poor communication and a lack of involvement in the daily lives of residents.
Villager, Adderly Sabinus, said village committees were previously appointed directly by certain political parties, resulting in residents’ priorities often being sidelined.
“Many basic needs of villagers were not conveyed effectively because appointed leaders rarely went to the ground, did not engage with the community and only appeared when there were specific interests,” he said.
As such, residents hope the JKKK selection this time will be carried out fairly, transparently and openly, allowing villagers themselves to choose representatives they truly trust.
They believe an election-based system would ensure that only individuals with majority support are chosen, thereby strengthening public confidence in local leadership.
Apart from the selection method, residents also proposed several key criteria for JKKK candidates.
These include having at least the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualification and a pass in Bahasa Melayu to ensure they can communicate effectively, manage official documents and relay information efficiently to the authorities.
“We want village leaders who are knowledgeable, confident in speaking and capable of bringing residents’ voices to higher levels without raising doubts,” said another villager.
At the same time, residents stressed they no longer wanted village committees that merely talked but failed to act.
Instead, village leaders must be proactive, decisive and constantly attentive to issues faced by residents, whether related to basic amenities, welfare, security or social concerns.
Other criteria highlighted included candidates being free from any criminal record, possessing integrity and having a clean personal background.
Residents believe leaders with good morals and discipline can serve as role models, especially for village youth.
In terms of appearance, the JKKK members chosen are expected to be presentable, neat and courteous, as they represent the village and serve as official liaisons with external parties.
Good conduct and appearance are seen as a reflection of one’s commitment to the responsibility entrusted.
Most importantly, residents want JKKK members who listen to grievances, are approachable and do not practise favouritism.
Village leaders should also act as an effective bridge between residents and the government.
Overall, Tambunan residents are clear in their expectations, they want a more democratic, transparent and people-centred system for selecting JKKK.
They believe that with elections and clear criteria in place, village leadership will be stronger, more credible and better able to drive development and well-being in the local community.
