Dazzling Penampang house draws crowds
Family members let visitors take photos of their fully decorated house.
PENAMPANG: With Christmas a fortnight away, a corner house in Taman Tropikana Villa has again been attracting crowds with its lavish decorations and festive atmosphere.

It is the second year the Tann family has transformed their home into a public attraction, continuing a tradition that began in 2024.

The idea came from developer George Tann, 47, who wanted to bring joy to the community.

“This is our second year doing it, and people keep coming here. My father is very generous with his decoration ideas.

“We are assisted by family members and workers to set everything up.

“The house has been open to the public since Dec 7 and will remain so until New Year’s Day,” said Angelo.

Located at the end of the housing area, the house benefits from extra space for decorations.

George explained that the family handled all the work themselves, spending about RM30,000.  Outsourcing the set-up, he estimated, would have cost closer to RM80,000.

Apart from dazzling lights and elaborate displays, visitors are treated to buffet food and drinks every night until the New Year.

The festive atmosphere has drawn young families with children as well as senior citizens, many expressing awe at the unique set-up.

“With children’s laughter and seniors in awe, the vibe here is truly special,” said one visitor.

George said many people asked why he spends so much money on the decorations.

“I want to see people happy, and that makes me even happier. Regardless of religion, Christian, Muslim, or others; we are all the same, seeking happiness,” he said.

As a father of three, George added that his greatest joy is seeing children laugh, families smile and people talking to each other in good spirits.

“That’s all I want to see and contribute to the community at large. I let my son Angelo handle most of the visitors, while I just sit back and enjoy watching people take photos and children laughing away. That is my happiness,” he said.

The Tann family hopes their decorated home will continue to be a highlight for the Penampang community each year, bringing people together in celebration and joy.

George added that food is replenished as soon as it runs out, making sure everyone can enjoy both the sights and a full stomach.

Interestingly, the family had only been testing the lights on Dec 7 when the public quickly became aware of their festive setup.  Since then, the house has remained open nightly, welcoming visitors until New Year’s Day.
